Tackling Food Loss, Empowering Youth, Transforming Communities

Smoothie Arena Hub is a youth-led social enterprise tackling post-harvest fruit losses in Nigeria by transforming surplus and imperfect produce into affordable, nutritious products. Across Sub-Saharan Africa, including Nigeria, fruits often spoil due to inadequate storage infrastructure and limited market access. This leads to significant income losses for farmers and increased methane emissions from decomposing organic waste. Our model intercepts surplus produce at the source, works directly with smallholder farmers, and converts it into value-added products while creating green jobs for youth and women.

Beyond processing, we integrate capacity building and digital innovation to strengthen local food systems. To date, we have trained over 2,000 young people and women in food processing and entrepreneurship, and reached more than 4,000 individuals through nutrition advocacy and food waste awareness initiatives in schools and communities. As we scale, we are developing a digital farmer-to-buyer marketplace to improve transparency, reduce supply chain inefficiencies, and minimize waste across the value chain.

Our long-term vision is to establish decentralized, climate-smart circular food hubs powered by renewable energy. These hubs will reduce methane emissions, stabilize farmer incomes, and contribute to building inclusive, resilient food systems across Nigeria and beyond.

Meet the founder

Mark is a social entrepreneur and the founder of Smoothie Arena Hub, a community-driven enterprise reducing post-harvest fruit losses while expanding access to affordable nutrition and youth entrepreneurship in Nigeria. Raised in a rural community, he witnessed firsthand how fruits spoiled due to poor storage and limited market access, even as families faced malnutrition and unemployment. This experience inspired his commitment to building practical, locally driven solutions that strengthen food systems and create economic opportunity. Through Smoothie Arena Hub, Mark works directly with smallholder farmers to transform surplus and imperfect fruits into nutritious products while empowering communities. To date, the initiative has trained over 2,000 youth and women, reached more than 4,000 individuals through nutrition and food waste awareness programs, and partnered with 30+ farmers. With a background in Biology and a Master’s in Data Science and Technology in progress, Mark combines science and data-driven innovation to scale sustainable solutions. His long-term vision is to build inclusive, resilient food systems that turn waste into nutrition, dignity, and sustainable livelihoods.
Our Story
Imagine watching piles of food rot in the sun. Mark did. And he decided to do something about it. Meet Mark a 28 years old Nigerian who has a real local impact, sustainablity and his mission is to fight food waste and emissions. His mission was inspired by a heartbreaking sight near his home in Nigeria: piles of ripe, colorful fruit left to rot in the sun. Food that could be feeding people in need. But a lot of “bad fruit” isn’t bad. It’s just too ripe, unsold, or ignored Mark realized how much spoilage was contributing to the food waste epidemic and increasing greenhouse gases released from the decomposing fruit. So he changed things, He took the opportunity to turn a global issue into a local solution Mark created Smoothie Arena, a social impact initiative that rescues surplus fruit that would otherwise go to waste. Smoothie Arena rescues surplus fruits and turns it into healthy smoothies, juices and animal feed. He runs school workshops on sustainable agriculture, environmental awareness and entrepreneurship.

Our Vision and Mission

A world where no good food goes to waste, communities are nourished, and sustainability drives local change.

We Stand:

To fight food waste and reduce emissions by rescuing surplus fruits and transforming them into healthy smoothies, juices, animal feed, and educational opportunities that empower communities—starting locally and inspiring global impact.

Problems:

  • 1.6 trillion tons of food wasted yearly, with fruits making up 45% (Post Harvest 2022)
  • In Benue, 70% of fruits go to waste due to limited food processing (Vanguard, June 2022)
  • Farmers face economic hardship; youth and women lack opportunities
  • Wasted fruits emit methane, contributing to climate change
